How to make money with mirrors: "with 2 grand I make 10"

How to make money with mirrors is a question many people ask while thinking about machines, courses or capital. In the Arena do Vidro final, the best answer came from the man who had just lost. Rômulo Sullivan finished with 27.12 against 29.37 for Janael, watched the R$ 10,000 go the other way, got the runner-up prize and said: "with these two thousand in prizes, I make 10 thousand."

The consolation prize was a R$ 2,000 supply kit from LED Glass: rubber trim, frames, touch switches, everything used in the Arena. Almost a Christmas basket, was the joke at the time. In this post I tell the scene and what that sentence teaches anyone with a glass shop. The episode is in the video above.

The runner-up prize: a box with R$ 2,000 in supplies.

What that line says about how to make money with mirrors

Look at what he saw. He had just lost the biggest round of the season, adrenaline still high, and he did not see a box of material. He saw stock that turns into mirrors sold. That is how a glass shop owner thinks: supplies are not a prize, they are the raw material of revenue.

I will not tell you here that two thousand turns into ten thousand in so many days, because we never measured that and every market has its own prices. The line is his. What I can do is show the reasoning behind it.

How to make money with mirrors: "with 2 grand I make 10"

The math behind it: what goes into a mirror price

  • Supplies: glass, LED, driver, switch, frame, rubber trim. That is what was in the box, minus the glass.
  • Labor: your time and your crew's, cutting, edging, assembling and installing.
  • Fixed costs: rent, power, vehicle, glass waste.
  • What is left: that is what pays for your growth, and it comes from the gap between cost and the value the customer sees.

Making money with mirrors does not come from the material, which anyone can buy. It comes from turning that material into a piece the customer wants and pays well for: a good shape, well-done lighting, clean finish and an installation that never brings you back.

Losing the final and carrying on

Rômulo Sullivan smiling with the supply kit in front of him after the result of the final
He had just lost the final and was already doing the math.

Rômulo had said during the round that he slipped on the mirror measurement, and after the challenge he summed it up: the mirror had to stand up, in a frame, and he delivered the essential. Anyone with their own business knows that feeling. Some days you give your best and do not win. The next day the shop opens just the same.

In the Arena we show glaziers under pressure, and that is why this scene stayed with me more than many technical rounds. The champion took the money, and he earned it. The runner-up left with a plan.

Can you tell how much money mirrors make?
It depends on your costs, your market and your price. I do not give a generic number: do the math with what you spend on supplies, labor and fixed costs.
